Ornamental Grasses like all plants need some thought to position and grouping and the location and style of the garden. We have clients with open gardens near the sea and clients who have small minimalist city & town garden and are looking to add height and structure to make the garden an extension of their living space in as natural a way as possible.
Thought given upfront means that you’ll have years of enjoyment as the grasses become more and more part of the natural landscape of your garden. In some ways, grasses can be the most undemanding of plants as they require little care except a smarten up once in a while.
There are grasses to suit all garden sizes and soil types, and all suppliers should give you a guide as to what plant will thrive where and with what, but do some research of existing clumped grasses to see what works and what works in an existing situation.
Perhaps the most important thing to know if you are unfamiliar with grasses is that grasses reproduce 2 ways, by sending up new shoots from their roots or rhizomes and by seed distribution.
Most grasses enjoy sunlight, as much as possible, however there are a number of varieties of ornamental grasses that tolerate shade for part of the day. Grasses tend not to be too bothered about the type of soil they’re in as long as it doesn’t stay waterlogged for the majority of the time, if you have boggy ground you’re better off looking for sedges rather than grasses.
In fact some of the grasses can make a barren, lifeless part of the garden look verdant and rich and will do so without needing much in the way of feeding either. Also, grasses in general do not suffer much from pests and diseases.
If your grasses are showing any signs of stress the best thing to do is dig them up and move them somewhere else, it won’t harm them, ornamental grasses are hardy plants. Finally once again consider the size of the plant not just when you buy it but what it’s going to look like in 3, 5 and 10 years’ time.
Enjoy your ornamental grasses!
