How to look after grasses

Grasses are one of the easiest plant groups to look after in your garden. Once you have received your new grasses from Ornamental Grasses Online it is important to try and plant them into your garden or container as soon as possible to prevent them drying out too much.

Soak your new grass in a bucket of water while you prepare the soil. Choose where your new grass is going to live. Most grasses like a well-drained soil in a sunny position and can cope well with some drought, and cold and windy weather. Dig a hole deep enough so that the roots of your new grass are at least 2cm (1 inch) below the level of the soil when planted in the ground, and at least 5cm (2 inches) wide than the pot. Add a good handful of organic compost into the hole, tap the grass out of the pot, put it in the hole and add more organic compost to fill the gaps. Make sure the compost is firmly pressed down to prevent pockets of air sitting around the roots. Water your new grass until it has established.

Deciduous grasses can be cut back to about 10cm in spring to encourage fresh new growth. Evergreen varieties can be trimmed lightly in late spring. All grasses benefit from a light feed of chicken manure in spring to encourage plenty of new growth.
